New Series: Growth and Expansion

Large Expressive Charcoal painting of my own horse with the newer bas relief sculpture, “Exhilaration”. These pieces are inspiring a new series for my studio that I’m intrigued and delighted to pursue.

I'm feeling a new series growing in my heart. Blurring the lines between sculpture and painting, using some of the most ancient media used by humans. I seek to evoke emotions and memories of strength and beauty. By turns tranquil or accelerating, deeply connected to the Earth and natural processes. Seeking thoughtful simplicity, intriguing texture and suggesting detail to bring the subject and viewer alive. Gestural art brought to completion. Inhabiting both three dimensions and two dimensions across over between sculpture and painting using ancient historical media and practices to step into light of the Modern world.

I will begin my new work with a series of sketches and studies using primarily charcoal and possibly some ink so that I can use gestural Strokes and quickly develop my ideas and allow them to be seen. It is challenging to go from a vision in your head to work in the real world and I have not often worked in a conceived series like this so this will be a fabulous growing opportunity.

I plan to work up from my favorite sketches into work on canvas and panel and bringing into the work palette knife plaster, clay plaster and Beeswax or Dorland's cold wax.

I want to use both gesture and sculpture in these pieces to convey energy and the thought process between action and contemplation to draw the viewer into contemplating their own relationship to Nature and the world around them possibly despite being surrounded by man-made things.
